The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “The best people are those of my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them.” Connecting with our predecessors is a matter of inheriting from the Prophet himself and passing that blessing to future generations. Across the Muslim-majority world, we can find maqams dedicated to those who first brought Islam to a particular land. Yet, in the United States, we largely remain unaware of the generations of Muslims before us who strove to practice and preserve their religion on these shores. America in the History of Islam will explore five centuries of our religion’s history in the Western Hemisphere, with a focus on the lessons that Muslims today can take from our predecessors. We will focus particularly on the longest-running, and most historically impactful, tradition of Islam to come to the Americas: that of African and African-descended Muslims. The topics we cover will include America’s “discovery” in the midst of the Crusades, stories of enslaved African Muslims, stories of free Muslim societies during the era of slavery, Islam’s role in trans-Atlantic Pan-Africanism, the rise of so-called Black Muslim religions, and Muslim interactions with domestic state surveillance and subversion. Join us for an 8-week class beginning June 17th, 2023 with Will Caldwell, our Director of Education. On Saturdays at 1:00 PM CT at Taleef Chicago. The class is open to all. Muslims of all backgrounds are encouraged to attend! Register, Space is limited. Childcare will not be provided. Refunds will be accepted up until 24hrs before the first day of class, no later than June 16th at 1:00 PM CT.
