Description:

Both scholars and Chinese authorities have obsessed over “Sinicized” Islam and going as far as to remove the foreign Islamness of Muslims, such as removing domes on Mosques and sending non-Han Muslims to concentration camps. This seminar will question how the roots of attempts at Sinicization have come about from the reading communities in Yunnan.
