Description:

Islam in South Asia: Myths and Realities

Islam in South Asia, also called the Indian Subcontinent, has a long, rich, and complex history, from the conquest of Sindh beginning in 711 to the heyday of the Mughal Empire to the largest combined Muslim population in the world residing in the modern nation-states of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. This is a story of kings and beggars, scholars and saints, immigrants and converts, philosophers and poets, men and women who lived in different subcultures, spoke different languages, followed different interpretations of Islam, yet all belonged to the world of South Asian Islam. In this talk, we will explore some important aspects of this history, highlighting a number of popularly-held misconceptions about Islam and Muslims in South Asia, with a view to illuminating the significant realities these have obscured for largely political and ideological reasons, especially in the modern era.
