University of Huddersfield, Lockside Building, LS2/10-11 – Huddersfield – United Kingdom
Race and education have often been a politically contested space. This half-day seminar on Muslims in Education aims to bring academics, civil servants, teachers and educationalists for a polylogue on race and ethnic disparity with a particular focus on Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities in Britain.
This seminar will aim to discuss the state of race in British schools and identify policy suggestions of overcoming racial inequality. Our speakers will be confirmed in due course. It will be ideal for academics, elected councillors, education and school leaders together with community activists.
Speakers Include:
Dr Atif Imtiaz an Affiliated Lecturer at the Divinity Faculty, University of Cambridge since 2012 and a lecturer at the University of Bradford. He has a PhD in social psychology at the London School of Economics on ‘Identity and the Politics of Representation: The Case of Muslim Youth in Bradford’. He has worked in policy as an Equality and Diversity manager at NHS Bradford and Airedale. Atif was previously the Academic Director at Cambridge Muslim College from 2010-2018.
Ashid Ali is the founder and Principal of London Enterprise Academy, a Free Secondary School serving some of the poorest pupils in London Borough of Tower Hamlets. He grew up in Oldham and completed a degree in Geography from the University of Huddersfield in 1997. Ashid has worked in four different schools in inner London at all levels of leadership. In 2022 Ashid was awarded the Freedom of City of London for his services to Education.
Dr. Bilal Nazir is currently a Lecturer in Educational at Leeds Beckett University. Born and raised in Bradford. He completed his doctorate in 2020 which primarily explored student transition from further to higher education examining the impact of vocational education policy and practice. He is now actively teaching and publishing on race and vocational education and training, with interests in curricula, pedagogy and assessment.
Mohammed Farooqui is presently an Associate Assistant Headteacher at Batley Grammar School. Mohammed transitioned into teaching following a successful 22-year career in the pharmaceutical industry. He completed a degree in Law and a Masters in lifelong learning at the University of Huddersfield. He is an advocate of restorative practice and learner inclusion. Mohammed is presently in the final year of his doctorate exploring the narratives detailing the positive educational outcomes of Pakistani males stemming from Azad Kashmir.
Dr Jayne Price is Acting Head of Department and Head of Division for Initial Teacher Education (Schools) in the School of Education and Professional Development, University of Huddersfield. She teaches across the full range of teacher education programmes. Prior to joining the University, she taught for 15 years as a music teacher in secondary schools in Derbyshire and Leeds. Jayne was also the Musical Director of the Leeds Girls’ Choir for many years. Her current research focuses on inclusive practice in music education.
