The Trials and Jubilations of Translating Arabic Literature

Speaker:

Sawad Hussein

Arabic-English Translator and winner of the 2019 Arablit Short Story Prize and five English PEN Translates awards.

This talk will focus on the role of the literary translator as curator and what impact this has on the greater literary landscape. Using her published books as case studies, Sawad Hussain will delve into how at every stage of the process – from pitching a book, to translating it, to publicizing it – there is constant negotiation involved. Finally, she will also talk about the practicalities of living as an Arabic-English translator in the field today.
