Over three days and two nights in winter, the Muslim Institute retreats to the auspicious surroundings of Sarum College by Salisbury Cathedral, joined by a distinguished international panel of speakers for a programme of events. Fellows gather to debate and discuss the essential and pressing issues of our times, focusing on an annual theme, in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere. Each year we pick a different theme to discuss through lectures and panel sessions.
The theme of this year’s Winter Gathering will mark our half-century anniversary:
‘The Muslim Institute at 50: What happened and how the world changed’.
The sessions are organised decade to decade:
- Keynote: How it all began: In the Room with Ziauddin Sardar
- 1970s: The decade of dreaming: Building a new civilisation of Islam
- 1980s: The decade of revolutions: Iran, the Islamic Movement and political Islam
- 1990s: The decade of anger and self-organisation: Rushdie, Bosnia and the Muslim Parliament
- 2000s: The decade of activism and campaigning: Stop the War abroad and civil liberties at home
- 2010s: The decade of new beginnings: Critical thinking and learned societies
- 2020s: The Muslim Institute and its futures

- Dr Mustafa Ceric, Grand Mufti Emeritus of Bosnia-Herzegovina
- Dr Ziba Mir-Hosseini, legal anthropologist and activist
- Ziauddin Sardar, founder member of the Muslim Institute
- Humera Khan, co-founder of the An-Nisa Society
- Haroon Kalla, former deputy leader of the Muslim Parliament
- Madeleine Bunting, author, former associate editor of The Guardian
- Dr Abdelwahab El-Affendi, president and provost of Doha Institute
- Liz Fekete, director of the Institute of Race Relations
- Lateef Owaisi, founder editor of Crescent International
- Salma Yaqoob, founder leader of Respect Party
- Dr Iqbal Asaria, Islamic finance economist and community figure

Sarum College offers comfortable accommodation in single, twin and double rooms, mostly en-suite, and all halal catering. The weekend is free for all currently registered Fellows and is inclusive of accommodation and meals. All non-fellows are welcome and will be asked to meet the costs of accommodation and meals only. For each overnight stay at Sarum College with meals, the cost will be charged at £80 per person. If they prefer to stay in a local hotel, we will only charge them for meals at £30 per person per day.
Please encourage all those who are not institute fellows and who do want to attend this historic gathering to become a fellow by signing up online via the website before the start of October. Taking out full membership will be a much better option, as our fees are presently being held at £120 per annum. At only £10 per month, you will have free access to all our events, copies of our renowned quarterly journal Critical Muslim (worth £60 per year alone) and receive regular bulletins of our activities and those of our sister organisations.
Registration exclusively for fellows will be open until Sunday 15 October. After that we will begin to open it out to friends and colleagues of the Institute.
